The Iowa Hawkeyes took on the University of Northern Iowa Panthers on Saturday, Aug. 29.  The Hawkeyes started their first drive from the UNI 41 thanks to Mark Weisman’s 50-yard kick return.  A few plays later the Hawks pitch it to No. 29 LeShun Daniels Jr.  He goes around the corner for the first touchdown from 13 yards out.

The first quarter ended with UNI managing only a field goal, 7-3 Iowa. In the second quarter after the Panthers answered with a touchdown, Iowa marched 79 yards down field capping off the drive with a Weisman one-yard touchdown run. Weisman’s hard rushing totaled 10 carries for 34 yards.

Then UNI went on to kick its second of three field goals for the day.  And Iowa matches that with one of their own closing out the half with Iowa up 17-13.

In the Hawkeye’s first drive of the second half Jake Rudock tossed a nice floater up for grabs in the corner of the end zone and Tevaun Smith came down with it with one hand.  Then in the fourth quarter Rudock connected with Damond Powell for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Rudock completed passes to 13 different receivers he totaled 31 for 41 for 250 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hawks failure to score after a mid field interception counted as to minute of a miscue to match UNI’s 16 penalties for 128 yards.

On the defensive side the Hawks held their own whenever the field shortened as UNI threatened to score.  However too many open men and big plays kept it a close game.  Another interception during UNI’s final drive secured the game.

Iowa will look to improve their secondary as they gear up for the next two at home against Ball State and Iowa State.
