Banned books spark controversy

Banned books continue to gain more publicity than their opponents intended because of a week long event.

Banned Books week is an annual event,  usually taking place in September, that allows readers to exercise their freedom to read what they want.

Sue Miller, Kirkwood Community College librarian, said, “We promote the Library Bill of Rights. Most librarians think people should have the freedom to read.”

The Kirkwood library is celebrating banned books week. Miller said, “Some of us are wearing buttons to promote the event.”

Miller added, “We also have a display of several banned books next to the help desk.”

According to Miller, college libraries banning books is a rare occurrence. Miller said, “Of the 25 years I’ve worked in college libraries, I’ve never seen a book banned.”

If a student wants to contest a banned book at a public library, they can let their voice be heard. Miller said, “Students can contact the director of the library that bans a book or they can attend a library board meeting at a public library.”

For questions about the event and banned books students can visit, www.ala.org/bbooks/bannedbooksweek. Students can also stop by the Kirkwood library to view the banned books display.
