For some students, coming to college can be stressful and as midterms approach, some may be looking for a way to relieve that stress. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, students gathered in Ballantyne Auditorium to listen to comedian Michael Dean Ester.

Ester has earned honors such as Comedian of the Year and is one of the top rated college comedians in the nation. He has also been on late night shows and HBO.

Ester was energetic throughout his performance and he said his quest during the show was for all the audience members to be able to answer the question, “Why am I here?” Although he is a comedian, he offered advice about life as well.

He began by telling the audience a little about himself. He said he  grew up in Garrett, Penn., and knew he wanted to be a comedian since he was in high school when he was told he was funny by one of the cheerleaders.

Kirkwood students who attended a leadership conference heard Ester and wanted to bring him to Kirkwood, said Associate Director of Student Life Seth Vander Tuig.

According to Vander Tuig, due to poor weather conditions and fire alarms going off before the show, attendance was lower than expected.  He added, typically, around 200-250 students will show up to a comedian show; however, over 100 students still attended.

Vander Tuig said, “I think, overall, the people there seemed to enjoy it.”

Before the show Vander Tuig said he asked students how they found out about the show to make it easier for students to find out about events in the future.

He said, “The number one thing that students said helped get them there that night was our text messaging option.”

This year, students can text the word ‘Kirkwood’ to 71441 so they can be reminded about the upcoming events at Kirkwood.
