Variety of choices at The Café

The Café is an on campus eatry with a style of class that compliments a social enviroment that students at Kirkwood Community College truly can enjoy.

Gourmet coffee drinks, decadent desserts and sizzling stir-fry are some of the various menu choices in The Café at Kirkwood Community College.

One popular food station is the pasta bar. Employees take requests from customers to create their desired pasta dish made right in front of them. Choices include meat, vegetables, sauces, cheese and two different types of noodles.

“The first station I started with was pasta,” said General Manager Kyle Davis “and it was just so popular that I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take that away or move on to something else.”

However, Davis said he had a niche to do something different. On the first Friday of every month, the pasta bar becomes a stir-fry station. For the most part, students have given positive feedback, according to Davis.

The pasta bar is one of many stations in The Café. Also available are separate stations for coffee, pizza, bakery items, sandwiches, fried foods, a salad bar, soft drinks and what Davis calls convenience store items that include candy bars, soda and much more.

A large part of running The Café are the employees Davis hires to create the vision he has for the cafeteria. Employees are not Kirkwood students earning credit. They are from the culinary arts program working to gain kitchen experience.

Culinary arts student Aimee Schafer said she works with other employees to create a hard working but friendly atmosphere.

“I’m the kind of person who doesn’t like bringing stress into the environment,” Schafer said. “So I try to stay as positive as I can and try to keep other people’s morale up.”

Davis has been in charge of the Café since June of 2012 and he said he had a vision to make it a place for students to come to get what they need, along with a fun atmosphere.

Davis said, “The difference between us and anybody else is the friendly faces you see when you walk in the door and the attention to detail that my staff has to provide the best services to my customers as possible.”
