Danielle Coover has been studying Communications at Kirkwood Community College. The Communications/Media PR department awarded her with outstanding student.

Coover is a native of Belle Plaine and said she comes from a large close-knit family.

“We are in each other’s business but not in a bad way,” she said. “Whenever there is a big storm we all come together and clean the farm. It’s like a family party day.”

Coover said her brother previously attended Kirkwood and her mother is a recent Kirkwood alumni. She said she is carrying on the tradition.

In regard to being named an Outstanding Student, Coover said, “I’m incredibly surprised because I’m the kind of person who never thinks what I’m doing is being recognized or seen. I kind of just do it for myself”.

Coover said she has stayed busy earning her place on the Dean’s List, singing and performing in two Jazz Choir groups.

Previously, she was also involved with Kirkwood Student Productions (KSP). Coover stated KSP was fantastic and it helped to introduce her to a lot of fun people. She said it gave her a lot of hands-on experience.

Jazz choir director, Fred Kiser, said he is not surprised Coover was chosen for the Outstanding Student award. Kiser said, “She is a really good leader. She leads by example with sort of a quiet intensity”.

Coover stated the best part about Kirkwood has been meeting all the people. She said, “I wouldn’t have any of the friends who I have now, the support, the determination or anything really if it wasn’t for the people who I’ve met here”.

She also expressed that the most challenging part of her program has been meeting deadlines.

Coover said she is looking into transferring to Loras College after graduation. She said she likes smaller class sizes and she knows Loras will provide that for her.

Coover said one of her career goals is to help her brother expand his business. She said her brother is an audio engineer who helps produce music for local bands and she enjoys helping him with public relations.

Coover added that in reality someday she would like to be a sports journalist for the Green Bay Packers.

“I love the Packers because it is our family team,” said Coover.
