Mead honored as Outstanding Student

For Kirkwood Community College student Jeffrey Mead, his greatest accomplishment is simple. “Just being here,” he said.

“There was a gap of 18 years between high school and college,” he added.

Mead, who has been on the Dean's list two out of the three years he's been coming to Kirkwood, said he is pursuing an Associate's in Liberal Arts and plans to go on to the University of Iowa. “I've been an actor and a singer all my life, so I'm hoping to get into theater when I get to the University,” he said.

Mead is a native of Iowa. He was born in Cherokee and moved to the Iowa City area when he was 4 years old. He currently attends the Iowa City campus full time.

Despite his busy life, with working part time, going to college and continuing in theatrical activities, Mead said he has still managed to perform in plays such as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and participate in a monthly Shakespearean reading group.

Mead said, “Casting changes from scene to scene, sometimes even within a scene, with people randomly changing voices and accents, so it's never the same and always a lot of fun.”

Mead said in regard to his future he would “like to have a clearly defined plan, but that's not the case. I just hope to be able to do something I truly love and make a career and a life of it.”

After the University of Iowa, he said his plans are really not definite though he hopes to do something in music or theater, since those are his greatest passions.

Mead was selected as one of Kirkwood's Outstanding Students, an honor awarded to “exceptional students who really make a difference,” according to Agriculture Science professor Cherylann Stewart.  “When we thought of hard work and dedication-we thought of Jeffrey,” she said.

A total of 138 students were honored at the Outstanding Student ceremony April 3.
