Fight exam week stress

For many students final exams can be one of the most stressful times in college. Students have essays due, speeches to give, tests to take and stay up all hours of the night cramming in as much information they possibly can.

This is the second semester the Kirkwood Community College Library will host an all-day event to help students relieve some of that stress. This semester the event will be held on Tuesday, April 28, from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m., in the Kirkwood Library located in Benton Hall.

According to Kirkwood Librarian Sue Miller, activities will include Tai Chi, a yoga-like relaxing way to fight stress, therapy dogs students can pet, games to play, coloring books and crayons, two electric massage chairs and a raffle.

The raffle will include prizes from the bookstore, as well as two $5 drink and food certificates from the Café.

Miller added that the therapy dogs will also be provided during finals week. The library will post a sign outside the library when dates have been finalized.

Cassandra Brower, Liberal Arts, said she enjoyed her experience at the Exam Cram last semester. “I thought it was fun. The stress dogs were a nice break because I miss my dogs from home and it was comforting. The snacks were nice just because free food is nice,” she said. The library will be offering coffee, lemonade, water, hot tea and popcorn from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.

She continued by saying, “I feel like a lot of other schools don’t do that. Kirkwood is very accommodating, which is really nice.”

According to Miller, the library wants to make it a fun day, but also an academic day as well. “We don’t want to take away from the studying. That will still be available on the second floor. We want to make sure students know they can still come that day and go to the second floor, which will be kept quiet,” she said.

Academic activities will include writing tutors from the English faculty for students on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Math tutors will be available in Tutoring Services located in 2071 Cedar Hall, and students can earn their Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification in Nielsen Hall.

Miller stated, “I was a college student myself. I always got very nervous and uptight around exam time and when papers were due. I think for me, this would have been a wonderful relief to take part in.”
