If you're looking to learn how to cook, get new ideas for dinner or just want to have a good time, Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen at NewBo City Market offers those opportunities and more.

Kirkwood’s kitchen space at NewBo features 1,500 square feet of learning space that is equipped to teach culinary skills to the community year round.

Kirkwood brings in instructors, like Alison Kosck, to share their knowledge with the classes taught at NewBo. Kosck is a former Kirkwood graduate and she also previously worked at the Hotel at Kirkwood Center. She is currently a Pastry Sous Chef at the University of Iowa.

“I give them a broader spectrum of food and different techniques. I like to give them tricks and ideas to further their culinary knowledge”, she said. Each class averages around eight people and the cost ranges from $39 to $69.

Along with bringing her expertise, Kosck also brings her passion for food to the table. “I love teaching because I want people to know more about food. As I keep teaching I am finding that people know very little about food. I just want people to be knowledgeable because food is great. Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this”, she said.

According to Evone Vognsen, director of Continuing Education Program Development, “The Continuing Education unit is always looking for space for our program. In the past we were using the kitchens at local middle and high schools or the kitchen from the credit side of the college.” She said when they heard about the development of NewBo they knew this would be the perfect space for their culinary programs.

The NewBo facility offers open enrollment classes, Kirkwood Interactive Camps for Kids (K.I.C.K.), a partnership with Metro High School that offers basic culinary classes and corporate team building for local businesses.

The corporate team building classes incorporate soft skill training into the session. “We offer conflict management, communication skills, change management and accountability,” Vognsen said. These concepts are incorporated to help companies grow, work better as a team and be more cohesive.
